Chung-Ying Hou’s work centers on the hand. As an extension of the body, the hand is where people meet the world: it touches, makes, and changes things, and is changed in return. Through hyperrealist painting, Hou lets the painted hand mirror the painting hand, reminding viewers that behind every image lies a hand that made it.

 

From the narrative gestures of Hand’s Parable to The Vision, where close-up views turn skin into landscape, he uses realism to examine how we see: the more precise the depiction, the more clearly it reveals that what we see has been constructed. His practice has since expanded into frame-paintings, performance, installation, and collaboration with AI. He explores manipulation through the Chinese hand radical 扌, negotiates with fate through fortune sticks in the street, and replaces Guanyin’s face with a hand in response to algorithmic simulation. Most recently, he has woven his own fingerprint from plant fiber and handmade paper.

Together, these works ask: as the hands that make images disappear behind technologies and systems, how can we recognize the invisible hand, and how can we still leave our own trace?
